I'm afraid of the Dark
Location
Something dangerous lurks in the shadows
It’s gangling grotesque figure lets out an eerie cry of warnings
Night after night
Hiding it’s sunburned flesh
It creeps in the shadows
I’m afraid of the dark
If the struggle to be pretty
Wasn’t such an arduous journey
Maybe it would be an cinch to show brown flesh
But no one wants to see a surfeit of sun crisped skin
I’m afraid of the dark
They reside in the underworld, the dark ones,
But choose to frighten us from behind the thick velvety curtains of the shadows
“They’re monsters” exclaimed the white one.
I’m afraid of them
They’ll chastise you
Abuse you; brand you as unworthy of achieving beauty
Banish you to the underworld with the rest and laugh at your misfortunes from the heavens above
“We’re Gods” exclaimed the white one.
And I’m afraid of them
But are they truly scary, the dark ones?
Or do they simply pontificate on your impending tragedy?
Are their baleful cries full of harmful intent?
Or are their annihilative swipes cover-ups for friendly forms of safety?
Are they my brothers? My sisters?
Still I’m afraid of them.
Lobbying between the dark and the light, I’m afraid of the dark but still afraid of the light.
But are they honestly beautiful, the white ones?
Or do they simply slap on pounds of make-up and botox to hide their impurities?
Are their views of beauty full of self-absorbed ideals?
Or do they actually know what they’re talking about?
Are they the enemy?
Still I’m afraid of them.
Lobbying between the dark and the light, I’m afraid of the dark but still afraid of the light.
There is barely middle ground
You’re either sitting on a throne in the heavens,
Trapped in the shadows
Or stuck in limbo - the in between
Until you they make their judgment on you
You can run but you can’t hide
Just hope you survive because
Once they throw their arrows of death
All you can is close your eyes and hope for the best
Lobbying between the dark and the light, I’m afraid of the dark but still afraid of the light.
I’m afraid of the dark.
