If There's One Thing

If there's one thing I need,

Just know it isn't you.

Because if you were to leave,

to depart from my life.

I would still be here.

If there's one thing I need,

Just know it isn't acceptance.

I don't need acceptance

to breathe, or to dream.

If there's one thing I need,

Just know it isn't wealth.

The houses and cars,

the latest and greatest,

are far from what I need.

If there's one thing I need,

Just know it isn't people.

People who use me,

and lie.

If there's one thing I need,

Just know that it's hope.

Hope that if you leave,

I'll be able to smile again.

Hope that if I get rejected

I can get back up.

Hope if I lose all that I have,

I can start again.

Hope in humanity.

Hope amends

the disappointed and

the broken.

Hope is all I need.
