I Was Alive

Location

You went to see a doctor

And you heard my heart beat.

Months later you saw another doctor --

You walked out crying.

You loved my father so much

But he was never ready.

I could feel it in his touch,

You were only going steady.

That day, my father held your hand

And I knew I wouldn't survive.

Why was my death so sad,

If the doctor said I was never alive?

What makes someone alive

Is the beating of their heart.

Unless I was mistaken,

There was a beat, set from yours apart.

You knew I was there,

We had a special connection.

But you went to the doctor,

And my heart stopped, no question.
