I Am From
Location
I am from the shores beyond, whose travels for the Dream took so long
I am from heavy New England accents and snow storms strong
I am from busy streets to dirt roads
From tall pines to naked sidewalks
I am from nappy locks meets fair skin
From “black or white?” to mélange
I’m from skin the color of butterscotch and tight curls
I am from single mom and statistics beat
From going above expectation
I’m from textbooks, my studies deep,
From music notes, my remedy
I am from Jesus Christ, a love so astounding
I’m from He who has found me
I am from a great solace by His grace, a salvation that puts a smile on my face
I am from overcoming and staying strong
From fallen tears into comforting arms, when times are hard
I am from “Don’t give up!” and “Just move on.”
Stories told and lessons learned
Years have passed, Oh the wisdom I have earned
Where I’m from lies where I’ve been,
Family past, what others have
