Dear future me,

I hope that you are able to see

How far you have come

But haven’t forgotten where you are from

 

I hope that you get what we desire

The career, the love, and the chance to inspire

By this I mean true happiness of course

You have made it this far through faith and force

 

I hope that you remember

Each and every ember

Of the hard work you have put in

Realizing that the true adventure is about to begin

 

I hope that you can say you have made it

That you persevered and never quit

That all the studying and sleep deprivation

That the stress and frustration

Was not a waste of your time

And that you have finally reached your prime

 

I want to be an inspiration to the next generation

Maybe you will be their foundation

The baseline for their dreams and aspirations

That you are just one of many: another demonstration

Too long we have been held to a lower standard

Stereotypes have left us completely slandered

 

And yet I still hope that future me never forgets

Why I chose to follow my dreams with no regrets

Why I pushed myself past my limitations

Why I ignored the shortcuts and other temptations

To prove that there is nothing that can hold me back

That I will succeed despite each and every setback

 

All in the hopes of creating a brighter tomorrow

One where dreams come true without sorrow

Thinking of future me reminds me of so much

All of things that could be done, my potential and such

 

It also reminds me why representation does matter

And how maybe if I just ignore the negative chatter

That maybe I will make it and become future me

Because at the end of the day, she is all that I want to be  

So as I write this in the present tense

Future me don’t forget that I dreamed of your existence
