Goddess Lost to Wonder
In-depth of night, at moon zenith
Once a huntress, chaser of animals
Who prowled the great wilds now lost
by the greedy hands of man
She watched as patron, young maidens her cherished
Birthing of child and midwifery were guided
with hands of tender care
That with such ease in turn
Struck plague and pain upon her charge
Worshiped in temples, worshiped in sacrifice of blood
Prayers for blessing, begging on broken knees
No longer now, those days long gone
Immoral still, name spoken in whispers
Scripts written withal
Now she plays, human,
Immortal, with human skills in
Art of bow now imitation,
A pallor of what she once was
As she struck, arrows of poison
Upon boastful Niobe’s daughters
Mortal masqueraded, chasity remains
Actaeon did earn, the lofty price
His arrogance wrought
In wrathful rage she struck
Weak human to powerful stag
Hunted then by dogs his own
A man found she did, one alone above all
Who sent his arrows through the trees
As she once did
Hunter, huntress together without love
Until seduction set in, offended with hurt
To murder her companion, Orion untouched by love
She kills men no more
For a wrongful glance at her ethereal image
Arrows of jealous revenge
Strike flesh in this time
She is but a pretty girl, who from time gone
Now walks alone in a new world, a ghost of names
Whispered in winds anew: Artemis
