Global Citizens

Location

Global Citizens

First week of school, info booths galore,

Fliers and pamphlets stacked to the roof from the floor.

But one stood out proudly, simply sublime,

Study abroad, the chance of my lifetime.

The greatest experience, not something to miss,

They tell you to go, see the world, in all of its bliss.

I believe every word, I’m ready to go, and leave college behind,

I can see it already, not a doubt in my mind.

Japan is my dream, my hope and my drive,

I’ve taken the language since I was like nine.

12 years actually, my minor in school,

If I never went, I would be simply a fool.

Now comes the hard part, my family is poor

School is expensive and study abroad is more.

How can I swing this, I think to myself

As I look to the empty piggy bank alone on my shelf.

Timing is key, when should I go,

What time is best and how will I know?

How about funding, or falling behind,

All of these worries stand in the front of my mind.

During the year? The chance is remote,

Rowing’s year round, I’ll lose my spot in the boat.

If only there was a time they encouraged you to go,

Your school sent you there, and paid for it too.

The summer before college, no time is better,

Nothing can stop you, not a single fetter.

And who bears the cost, the bills that you need?

The school that you go to, they could indeed.

Study abroad, let’s makes it required,

To make global citizens, we’ll get students inspired.

A term, or a year, that part you chose,

As long as you return and spread your new views.

Cost is no issue, funds will be ample,

Who will pay? Let me give you an example.

The university you go to, they’ll make it a priority,

Globally minded, it needs to become the majority.

Worldly students, they need to be created,

It’s the college’s duty, let’s get them educated.

Send us abroad, and pay for the trip,

Any other students, we’re sure to outstrip.

So there’s my idea, the change we should make,

Send all the students out of the states.

Don’t charge them a penny, make it all free,

And a greater country we surely will be.
