First Day
My first day of elementary school
My mom woke me up and made me breakfast
With a lunch box in my hand I walked to school
With my white sketchers that had double knots
So I wouldn’t trip over myself
I played with my friends who talked about toys.
My first day of middle school
My mom woke me up and went straight to work
With a brown bag as my lunch I walked to the bus stop
With my black converse that had just a knot
So I wouldn’t stand out
I met with my friends who talked about boys.
My first day of high school
I woke myself up and made breakfast
With no lunch because I didn’t wake up early enough
I ran to school because I was late
I wore nameless shoes with double knots
So I wouldn’t have to tie them again
I met with my friends who talked about sex.
My first day of parenthood
I woke up to the cries of a child and fed it
Stayed home while my husband left for work
I didn’t put shoes on because my feet were swollen
I didn’t talk to my friends while I was locked up at home
So I hummed my baby to sleep.
My first day of the end
I laid in bed unable to get up
Being feed through a straw because I couldn’t chew
Thoughts that raced through my head
Feet that were shoeless because I had nowhere to go
Since I’ve already been everywhere I needed to be
I talked to my family about the past.
