Fight Another Hour
By Jesse Yelvington
Screw you for saying who and what I’m ‘supposed’ to be,
Though I hope you know that nothing you could say will ever change me;
I don’t understand why you attack me at my heart,
When my intention is only to create peace and art.
I’m trying to make a place
where it’s not necessary to be ‘normal’ to feel safe.
A place where everyone can go
when everywhere else has said “no.”
So stop telling me who and what I am,
As though my body is a hand
of cards that can’t be changed,
that must stay with me for the whole game.
Because who I am isn’t what you see;
rather it’s the things inside of me.
The love, the hope, the will and the power
To fight for my rights another hour.
