Feeding the Monster
Just like a heartbeat,
white people are born with white privilege,
Looking at me
you would never guess
that I am 50% Hispanic,
According to my Maybelline foundation stick,
my skin tone is “Pure Ivory,”
Pale as the snow,
that populates my small northeastern town every December,
and in our society I am also “pure,”
in reality I am purified,
purified from the filth
that our society is ridden with,
where in this world,
it is acceptable,,
to discriminate by;
profiling citizens based on the color,
of their skin,
Should I value my father’s European nationality
more than my mother’s Puerto Rican heritage?,
It has provided me with opportunities
I would have not received if I had,
darker skin,
curlier hair,
and spoke with a thick accent,
Mature discussions
are essential
if our society is to gain awareness
of the imbalance that exists,
Without,
we continue to feed the monster that lives under our nation’s rug,
until it bears its teeth
and shows itself
in its full, frightening, form,
and overt racism
that appears to be becoming
more and more
acceptable in recent months
will continue to grow into
fully,
fledged,
