The Fear I am Born With
I'm afraid to walk down a street
or into a gas station to pay for my gas.
I swing my keys and prepare for a battle
just to go and grab a coffee.
The fear that lies within every girl
from pigtails to high heels
we live in a world of discrimination
A world where girls are brought up in fear
Don't talk to strangers every kid eventually hears
but only girls hear the occasional
don't make eye contact, don't say hello
because in our society
it's no longer taken as a kind gesture.
We don't want to send the wrong message.
It's not that we're defensive or rude in anyway
but when you offer or ask for a number
We don't know what to say.
I don't know who you are or what you're thinking.
and how can I answer while avoiding any trouble.
I'm so tired of not being able to speak
or walk in a country that is occupied by freedom.
Us women live in a world with chains around our hands
because we are restricted
by the 'mixed signals' of our generation.
I keep walking with my keys swinging in the wind
I look straight ahead and don't make any eye contact.
It would be nice to be nice and say hello
or to be able to ask how your day was
but only you would know
the things you are capable of
so I just assume the worst
because the only thing I know
is that I live in a world of discrimination
and fear that continues to grow.
