eyes open

every morning she wakes, eyes open,

and yet she is filled with regret.

the things she did last night, yesterday

months prior, years ago.

her actions haunt her, and

every morning she wakes, eyes open,

wishing she could go back and

wishing to change everything and

failing to do so. because

the past cannot be returned to and

the past cannot be changed. so

every morning she wakes, eyes open,

every morning she wakes, eyes filled

with tears and sorrow. until

she finally realizes that

every morning she wakes, eyes open,

when the same cannot be said for many.

and she thinks about her past,

and she thinks about her past's inability for change.

and she thinks about her future,

and she thinks about her future's capability

to be anything she wants it to be.

despite her mistakes

despite her regrets

her future stands, remaining

unaffected, untouched by her past.

and, now that she realizes

she can leave it behind,

and with every sunrise

she can change her future,

every morning she wakes, eyes open,

striving to live a life she cannot regret.
