Equality
If there was one thing I could change,
it would be the fear that dwells in every woman.
I would change how sexual harassment
is no longer a surprise, is regarded as common.
I would change the threats that surround us,
How girls walk to their cars, always brandishing their keys.
I would change the stereotypes all around us,
The teenager scared of the dress that ends above her knees.
The genders would be equal, respected just the same
A society that lacks violence and rape
A woman’s short skirt wouldn’t be worn with shame
Nor would she be judged on her body or her shape
If I could only change one thing,
I’d reform society’s view of girls.
And if I could just change that, well,
I’d have changed the whole world.
