The Covalent Bonds of Friendship; For Taylor

And the universe,

We are told,

Was born from gases and implosions

Energy chaotic and uncontrollable

Collided as atoms

And life was born.

But then she was born,

And he was born

As well as you, me

Us and We.

The miracle of life.

Seedlings of a family tree.

There are billions of people on Earth.

Of course not as many people as blades of grass,

Or dreams,

Or flowers ,

Or rain drops,

But enough at least to hurt the Earth

And ourselves.

So I wonder if it is our own inbuilt call for help,

Or the stardust seeping from our broken bones

That pulls us together?

Is it atoms and molecules that make up our laughter?

Is it some convoluted from chemistry,

An algebraic equation that says

‘C’ plus ‘T’ equals happy?

Or is it some heavenly message?

A spiritual connection

That laced our souls together

Like our fingers

And the music of our summers.

Do you remember at the beach,

When you would take my hand and we’d jump through the waves?

They’d crash around us,

But it felt like they did it for us.

A sign of submission,

Because we were supremely happy

In the summers at the beach.

And the universe,

We are told .

Was born from gases and implosions

Energy chaotic and uncontrollable

Collided as atoms

And life was born.

But was it the covalent bond of friendship

That brought us at our knees?

Or was it simply

Everyone’s meant to have a best friend

And you were meant for me.
