The Cold, Hard Truth

Location

A soldier shoots his last shot.
Letters to worrying mothers prove,
No news is good news.
You are comfortable and safe.

Skeleton children covered in dust,
Rummage through other's waste.
Unsure if tomorrow they'll see the sun,
You are comfortable and safe.

A young man's fingers, half sawn off,
He dared to have different beliefs.
No Bibles in any hotel drawers,
You are comfortable and safe.

Missing teeth, skin black and blue,
For the crime of showing her face.
Fear hidden behind an irremovable veil,
You are comfortable and safe.

A drunken crash, a mother's screams,
A little boy hides under his bed.
Unafraid of imaginary creatures, he knows,
The real monster's his dad.
You are comfortable and safe.

A girl age twelve or fourteen,
Too young to even drive,
Is forced to be a sex slave,
And you are comfortable and safe.

When it rains in this house, no one sleeps,
For their home can fall on them.
Walls made of mud are not very secure,
But you are comfortable and safe.

A father of five works three jobs,
While cancer destroyed his wife.
The disease may have killed their mother,
But it took their father's life.
You are comfortable and safe.

So much happens around us,
That we brush off or ignore,
Too busy with our own petty lives,
Stop.
Being so comfortable and safe.
