The city of “Brotherly

The city of “Brotherly Love”

By: Laura Hernandez

As our founder father had dreamt

The city of “Brotherly Love”

Was meant to be free from hate,

Regardless of:

Race, social class,

Religion, and sex.

We, who have lived in Philadelphia

Can tell you that things aren’t right,

And that the city of “Brotherly Love”

Is not exactly what Penn had in mind.

As I walk through the streets, I run into fights

I try to avoid them but it’s hard not to fight.

On my way to school I see “ladies of the night”

Many people judge them

But they don’t know what they’ve had to fight.

I see many things lying on the streets,

Form: Broken glass to tons of trash,

Torn papers to plastic bags,

And used needles to much more trash.

As I look up to the sky I don’t see any stars,

Because the sneakers hanging from the wire

Seem to block my sight.

It’s sad to say that everyday feels like fourth of July

From all the bullets that fly by.

Every day an innocent person dies

Due to the lack of love in each other’s hearts.

Many kids can no longer play outside

Because all the dangers that are caused by cars.

Like my grandma once said

“It’s the little things that count”,

So begin the change

And make the city of “Brotherly Love” a better place.

This poem came about from observations of my daily life. Although the reality is sad, I have hope that as time goes by the city of brotherly love will change one step at a time.
