Changed

They say it's impossible to change

They say you always stay the same

But what would they say if they knew

Of the change that I had gone through

On that insignificant late August day

With thunder clouds rolling our way

Lightning flashed on the sky line

But that didn't matter, it was time

Family and friends gathered around

Laughter and chatter was a cacophonous sound

Until the pastor called them all

To the water's edge, as rain began to fall

The silence spread over the crowd

As if all were bent before a King, bowed

The hush could be felt lingering on the skin

As the select few were about to be cleansed of sin

A few were before me as I waited on the sand

A cross bracelet from my parents clenchd in my hand

And then my name was called aloud

And suddenly, I no longer heard the crowd

I waded out, the cold kissing my ankles

And in my stomach were unknown tingles

They lowered me into beautiful Tahoe

Why the water felt warm, I do not know

But my only explanation would be this

The love of my Father was palpable bliss

Washing over me like the silky pure waves

The most serene peace of all my days

The moment under the surface felt like years

And in the stillness, vanished all my fears

Coming back up, I saw only the sky

And knew at once, changed forever was I

So again I ask, can we be changed?

Perhaps those that have been baptized would answer the same

For I have discovered a love so deep

The mere thought brings me to my knees

If only everyone would open their hearts

To the Lord, the place where the change starts

With Him, I see a whole new light

A happiness I never knew so bright

For He is the God who holds us dear

And forever and always, he is near
