Change the Limits

Location

It’s a curious machine
This human body
How does it move?
How does it balance?
With arms that lift
And legs that run
It’s a distorted view
This perspective of human feats
Human ability
Beauty is only seen in the most athletic
The most powerful
The most erotic
We take for granted what this body can do
And ask
What are its limits?
I’ve seen what happens when this body can’t do
When its limits are changed
Its ability diminished
And I see the beauty in this ordinary machine
In ordinary human ability
Human movement
Human strength
Do you have to run the fastest to be great?
Can there be grace in the fluid motion of a leg in stride
The roll of an ankle
And the bend of an arch
As you step onto the ground?
Do you have to lift the most to be mighty?
Can there be strength in the man who picks up his child
And carries him on his shoulders?
There’s something romantic about these mechanics
Something that’s been lost
Is this we why are chasers of the most erotic?
Has this romance become lust?
The very thing that creates this machine
Has become a performance
A circus act
One where we keep asking
What are the body’s limits?
We crave fast movements
And bizarre athletics
So by its ordinary nature
This body is not beautiful
It’s overlooked
Its ability to feel
To reach out
And extend its emotions
Explain its love with touch
Was once poetry
But now tabloid
Change the limits
Take away the speed
Take away the strength
Take away the lust
When there’s nothing to be exploited
You can understand this extraordinary machine
See complexity in its simplicity
That’s what I see
When my limits are changed
