Celebration of the Introvert

If I’d rather stay at home,

Baking, singing, all alone,

If I’d rather read a book,

Curled up in my quiet nook,

If I’d rather nod and smile,

Remain quiet for a while,

They say, “she’s timid, mousy, pensive,

Stern, dull, or apprehensive.”

Even when my mouth stays closed

Abounding judgment is disclosed.

We categorize our qualities

Exactly as we’re told:

Some buried deep within our bones,

Some treasured as pure gold.

Too many traits are dismissed

As useless, hopeless flaws,

But hidden strengths are missed

When they’re rejected without pause.

When my tongue is motionless,

My thoughts are running free,

Away from all these worldly things

Exploring what could be.

Instead of timid, mousy, pensive,

Stern, dull, or apprehensive,

I am calm, composed, cautious,

Gentle, thoughtful, focused -  flawless.
