Cat

Ancient roots running deep.
The strongest of instincts coursing through
the blood of one so familiar to us.

So sweet, and yet so fickle.
What do you see?
One moment, you roll on your back, inviting me.
I scratch your belly, and you purr.
You play with my hand, and I laugh.

And the next, in just a flash.
Claws like little knives
Lacerate my skin, tearing deep grooves
in my flesh.
Without a backward glance, you run off
and leave me wondering.
