Beautiful If We Let Ourselves Be

Look in the mirror and exude confidence
Break free of their stereotypes for us
Don’t let magazines define who we are: fat, skinny, beautiful, ugly
Show the unsuspecting world that our insecurities are no longer weaknesses
Shine the smile that bears a gap
Wear the dress that shows those curves they call fat
Play with the hair they say is a mop on your head
Others will define us no longer
Let the males and the media bite the dust if they only see skin deep
Those models on runways and covers are nothing but lovely, but so are we
No longer will we compare ourselves to an unattainable perfection
But by the same token, no longer will we judge each other
No more whispers behind one another’s backs,
How can she wear that? Does she even own a brush? Isn’t she so trashy?
Enough
We want respect, but we must earn it
We will earn it
The world will see our charge but not before we do
Accept your flaws and hold them closely, then release
Look to your right and see the flaws of another and embrace them, then release
Go along in this pattern until we can accept it all
At this moment we will have come a long way
At this moment we will continue to show the world
