An Aussie Summer

Location

Australia

Santa Claus and sleigh bells in hundred degree heat

Laughing boys with new bikes tearing up the street

Snowmen and reindeer just don’t seem to match

With the crack of the willow and screams of ‘catch’

An early morning surf with the sets rolling in

Or when its so bloody hot you just need a swim

But nothing says tradition like the Boxing Day Test

When England is the enemy, Test crickets the best

The Sydney Hobart yacht race starts just before lunch

The maxi’s out the heads always in front of the bunch

Running down the south coast with huge spinnakers set

On who will get line honours, many have placed a bet

It’s summer in Australia, our land down-under

Of afternoon storms of heavy rain and thunder

An ancient land so vast that elsewheres all afire

Sharing our brothers dreaming we all should aspire

50,000 years of country deep within our veins

Drovers on the wallaby wandering hot dry open plains

Drunken boat races in the Alice on dry river beds

and downing Darwin stubbies in corrugated iron sheds

Snags on the barbie, and not a shrimp in sight

Dead horse on your sanga and drinking all night

The countdown to midnight and fireworks begin

Car horns blasting to welcome the new year in.

Now Chrissy is over and the new year has begun

It’s time for my favourite, a fresh hot cross bun

With summer almost done and pitches all pulled up

It’s Football time again with all playing for the cup.

This poem is about:
My country

An Aussie Summer is reflection  of how I see my country in the heat of summer with the incongrous images of snowmen and Santa Claus in a fur suit
