Seventeen in English class

My ex-boyfriend has assaulted me in the future

And my friend eats pills that make him see red

In a metaphorical sense if you didn’t understand

I’m writing poetry for my teacher

About worlds swept away, my vision of life

Time seems to bring wounds so I write poems

A year later about all of the love in my heart for

The person who felt my pain

When I called him over the phone to say I’d been raped

His pills were flushed down the toilet and he wept for me

I think my heart is going to pop when I think about that

We destroyed each other for our own

Understanding of how to deal with the suffering we’ve had

Why do we use art to tell our love

When we simultaneously refuse to act in love

Now we talk on the phone 1,500 miles away

About once a month

I hope we’ve forgiven each other because in my mind

There’s no more room for pain; only bringing poetry to life
