An American Change

America is safe, America is free

Adolescent, I look upon the flag with my hand on my chest and hear the words

The land of the free and the home of the brave

I show my respect, I give my undivided attention to words that we all know

Listen to others that the land where I reside is beautiful

Young, unable to comprehend the world in a different perspective different from theirs

Thinking, without truly understanding

America is safe, America is free

Now I turn on the news and enter a new world

Same generation, Same era, Different America

One person dead turns to fifteen in a month

All with similar racial profiles

Their safety turns to fear of surviving another day

No longer feeling safe in the land of the free

Is America safe, America is free

Election year was comical

A political figure, a narcissist, our president

Deporting people who have grown up here

People who work and have family here

Forced to leave their life behind and journey into the unknown

Citizens turns into criminals

The American dream becomes corrupted

Is America safe, Is America Free
