Alzheimer's

Alzheimer's.

The diagnosis came my freshman year.

My grandfather.

One of the hardest things I've had to hear.

I taught him all the things,

that he first taught me,

how to play a round of cards,

and the family tree.

I have learned his favourites.

I remember them well-

his songs and his games,

so that when his mind fails,

I know that I've done

the best I could do,

to preserve this man

as he was in his youth.

I grew up.

And I was forced to grow fast.

Just one little word,

But its wounds will last.

Alzheimer's.
