An Alteration

Location

That disgusting dirt brown skin.

Covered in monkey hair arms.

Might as well eat bananas

All day and sniff butts.

No one man desires to feel

As if they’re bedding with a slave.

This skin is skin of my

Mother and mother’s before her.

Can’t get a real job.

Can’t be taken seriously.

Other coloreds ruin it for the

Civilized ones who break their backs.

Overlooked and beaten down.

With pearly-white skin

I could run the world.

My ideas are not stereotypical.

Let me drench my flesh in bleach.

Burn away the filth,

Let me be the real me.

The white girl trapped in a

Pickaninny prison.
