Unfair Learning

We all got the same mentality
Quit school, do your thing, be what you want to be
But no one wants to put the work in
No one has the courage to go against the government
Now i'm not saying they brainwashed us
I don't know anything about the federals
But they just throw things down our throats
With no explanation, just credentials
To get a good career and succeed in life?
Why don't you teach us
Instead of teaching us trigonometry
And other math crap like geometry
Expecting us to be intelligent
When all we know is probability
And for what?
To count how many red marbles Joe grabbed out from the bag
And Anne's ability to put three back?

I am sick and tired of all these lies we've been told
Regarding our future and what we need to know
What we need is knowledge
And sense that is common
But in this world we live in today
Common sense ain't so common
I bet you're wondering why
And the reason for that being
Is because of our major needing
To know how to think critically
But up until the 10th grade
Was when I started realizing how useless english class was
Initially being the most important class
To society and I
But backfiring right around
When we were finally conscious of the one hour that passed us by

Every single day
Those daily one hours were spent
Doing character charts
Supposedly defining our rank of "smarts"
The point being that there was none
Except to pass that grade and one up one
No personal encouragement to show that teachers care
Knowledge and intelligence is rarely even there
Ignorance and stupidity has dominated most minds
Pea brain laughs at the ambitious one caught in a book
Shouting "what a nerd guys, look!"
But don't look at the bookworm, look at your friends
The ones who use slang and no grammar to no end
Speaking like never educated fools
But they attended every roster, every school

Come SATs and he sits there dazed
If this is the apparent curriculum expected
To win us a ticket to college
How do they expect us to win it if they didn't
Once mention this knowledge?
So grammar, most important subject of all
Gets thrown out the window by the system
And the teachers who say that it's useless and common sense
Expect us to know it and get upset if we don't
I'm still wondering what even is a "past future perfect tense?"
Speaking of the elapsed time we spend
In the present, we're still learning,
are we learning enough?
In the past, we've learnt,
Will it all pay off?
The idiocy still stays
With little to no attention
Let me guarantee you that most don't even know
The Iraq war is still in action
The only awareness we're aware of
Would only be made possible when everyone
Jumps the bandwagon by posting statuses about disasters
Other than that, no awareness is said
No awareness is spread

A wacky celebrity mishap would get
More viewers and critics than anything yet
America's involvement with Syria and a chance at a World War Three
Isn't even a part of the "net"
But first let's mention the fact that
No one knows where Syria is
And Asia is not a country
California is not the only West Coast state
And Los Angeles is in its boundary
Geography is never taught
Unknown to its importance
With so many different lifestyles and cultures
It's a shame to not know the difference
Why the things we'll never need is what is focused on
But daily factual understandings
Are barely brushed upon?

College sits at the start of our lifeline
And we only know so much
Finding a triangle's missing sine
Instead of paying my bills and such

Now let me ask you a quick and final question,
Is the education system rigged
Or am i just simply stupid?

I agree that the system is defiantly flawed, and there are things that needs improvement, but I don't think all the examples of mathematics supports your message. Mathematics ARE important despite the fact that not everyone sees that or will even use it.

As far as teachers go, its kind of luck if you get good or bad teachers. I learn just fine from my teachers. However, that's exactly the biggest problem in my school personally. All the dumb and average kids get bad teachers that don't care, and people in advanced classes get the good ones. Why can't everyone get teachers that actually teach?

But I'm rattling on. You do have good points, and I defiantly agree with the English class and geography examples.

Yeah, I completely agree with you! That makes sense about the math thing. Of course, math is definitely 100% needed in life but sometimes the curriculum goes way into detail and depth with something in math that what we are learning turns to become something completely useless.

Thank you for your comment!

I don't agree with everything you said, but it was still an incredible poem. I can definitely connect to the portion about college and the SAT's because I am a senior this year, about to take the ACT for the third time, and dreading it because I am afraid my science and math will drop further since I have most definitely not seen what is given in that test, despite being in Calculus.

I also understand not knowing what is going on, and how irritating it is to try to figure out what is happening in the world when the headlines for the day are what new disturbance Miley Cyrus caused and the bad styles of famous celebrities.

In other words, I believe I was moved by your poem. :)

Thanks for relating to my beliefs on some aspects and Thank you so much for your feedback! :)

I agree. Not only do we learn things that can be completely irrelevant to our lives, but society teaches us that these things are needed. The structure of our lives HAS to be a certain way, and I love how you show this through your poem.
