I am Keven Ulrich, a 4th year Social Work major from Florida A&M University in Tallahassee, Fl. I have been given the unique opportunity to attend Columbia University in New York this fall to study social work on a Masters level, with a concentration in Social Enterprise Administration. I've chosen social work as my major simply because I love the idea of bettering my community. As cliche as it sounds, I love people and experience hurt when I see them suffer. I have taken on different projects in Tallahassee that have allowed me to see first-hand the difficulties local residents are going through. For example I've volunteered at the city's local jail, in hopes to understand the inmates and have assisted the social worker who works there by teaching basic education skills. I have volunteered at a local housing authority, known as the "projects", providing after-school care to young children. I've volunteered at our community's local garden, which was created to teach teenagers the responsibility and privilege of growing fruits and vegetables. I've intern at the state capital for a semester, shadowing a legislative intern and have learned the importance of lobbying and the policy process. My current place of employment is a children's runaway shelter, who serves children and families in hopes to restore homes. All while doing this I have maintained 3.51 gpa, qualifying me for the Phi Alpha honor society for social work and the Alpha Kappa Mu academic honor society, both which I have joined. As a young social worker, I have multiple aspirations, goals, and dreams, but there are a couple that have been on my heart for quiet a while. As a social worker with an advanced degree from Columbia University, I want come back to Florida and focus on communities in poverty. From what I see, there are so many changes that can be made by simply altering the environment. I have considered running for city commissioner in my hometown(Tallahassee, FL). Some changes that will affect lower-income families is the changing of the food in the area. In the southside of Tallahassee, the only food options available to residents is low priced fast food and generic brand grocery store food. I want low priced healthy food available the residents of that area, because I believe that a proper diet can effect overall function and quality of life. This is only an example of what I'd like to change as a social worker. Another desire of mine, is to incorporate a facility in the main area of the city that appeals to younger people by providing music therapy as counseling. The youth will use the means of song writing, recording, and playing instruments to express themselves and work through their issues. As a youth in Tallahassee myself, music was a major part of life, in that I was able to relate and express myself in ways that I could not with other people. Of course the program is music based, however because I'm pursuing a degree in Social Enterprise Administration , I am looking to make this a non-profit organization. The best thing about what I hoping to do, is that with or with out money I will still find a way to help my people. I look at goals as long term, meaning I will spend a life time working towards them if I have to. To me people mean life, and there is no reason left to live if I'm not helping them. Again my name is Keven Ulrich, I really hope that you considers my poem as revolutionary.
