Yesterday

I remember years of past

Howling down the mountain grey

Freeing all the stars at last

Was it really only yesterday?

I remember yesteryear

Watching all the cubs at play

Teaching them to fight, not fear

Was it really only yesterday?

I remember a mate who sings

Fearing not the twisted way

That life often seems to bring

Was it really only yesterday?

I remember the feel of Earth

Standing firm beneath my paws that splay

Belying one old grey wolf’s worth

Was it really only yesterday?

I remember seeing in the sky

In the rainbows that don’t long stay

A reflection of one wolf who’s died

Was it really only yesterday?

I remember smelling in the sea

Reflected in one sun’s shining ray

The future of the wolf I’d someday be

Was it really only yesterday?

But life is over for me now

I’ve breathed my last and can no longer stay

I remember a wolf who one day vowed

To protect and love till his last day

Was it really only yesterday?
