The Year of Goodbyes

2016 a duration of time, strung along by goodbyes

Some were required, but some were devised

I said goodbye to a mold, carved through childhood

One that often left me feeling more misunderstood

I said goodbye to tired loves of mine

Pieces of my identity it was time to leave behind

I said goodbye to small world, preserved by its own operations

It is now the wide unknown that captivates my fascination

I learned silence is a dangerous affair

It sustains ignorance as to what’s really there

My voice may be soft, with little reverberation

But my will and effort attempt at conversation

I came full circle to this place in time

To not reflect on this series of beautiful goodbyes

For each time I depart from the comfort I revered

I acknowledge ties and assumptions that need to be severed

To stay aware of this truth I continuously work to uncover

That this year of goodbyes has inspired me to discover
