Wonders of the Kitchen

The buzzing sound right by your bed
Wakes you out of nightful dread
Wondering if you should bake a bread
Preserve a jam or whip a spread

Sizzling, drizzling, wondering, blundering
Battering, shattering clattering, plundering
Cinnamon, saffron, cloves, or lime
Wondering if it’s the right hint of thyme

Skewering the chickens,
Basting the turkeys,
Browning the beef,
Poaching the eggs.

Panic rushes through your mind
Visualizing burnt lemon rinds
Leaping flames scarcely reach your face
As you swiftly grab the water vase

Sizzling, drizzling, wondering, blundering
Battering, shattering clattering, plundering
Cinnamon, saffron, cloves, or lime
Wondering if it’s the right hint of thyme

Speculating on a trifle
Meditating on a piefold
Scanning through a book of cooks
Looking for the perfect nook

Sizzling, drizzling, wondering, blundering
Battering, shattering clattering, plundering
Cinnamon, saffron, cloves, or lime
Wondering if it’s the right hint of thyme

Stop your act
Stop your mind
For there is still one thing,
Left to grind

What will I do with a burnt soufflé?
How can I manage a rancid hollandaise?

Sizzling, drizzling, wondering, blundering
Battering, shattering clattering, plundering
Cinnamon, saffron, cloves, or lime
Wondering if it’s the right hint of thyme

Wait one sec
And stop that knife,

Where’s my decaf coffee roast
For I still need my breakfast toast
