Winning the High School State Chess Championship

Ryan Breuer

I wake up, I’m thinking “today is the day”,

I get on the bus having games to play,

It’s a team event, can’t let my friends down,

Representing my team, my school, my town.

Must stay calm now, let anxiety go,

Must control my thoughts and let my mind flow,

Must stay in the zone, and be on my guard,

Must remain focused, although it is hard.

Inside I’m anxious, outside I’m eager,

Must show confidence, although it’s meager,

I sit down at the board, pen in my hand,

Glad for the chair, my legs too weak to stand.

I win the first round, and so does the team,

My first opponent was no match for me,

The second round’s faster, and we move on,

I won my game fast, though I dropped a pawn.

The third round is tough, but we make it tight,

By the time I draw, it’s late in the night,

Though we lost this round, we don’t hang our heads,

We’re happy with how close we came instead.

The next day, my first game is a quick win,

I won with tactics like skewers and pins,

The team wins as well, but that is not all,

We get one more chance as contenders fall.

Last round; one undefeated remains,

We have nothing to lose and all to gain,

We begin our games and again it’s tight,

But this time we win; it’s a three-way tie.

Tiebreaks, all three teams share the title,

But determining who wins is vital,

On Solkoff, the third tiebreak, we are two,

But that’s alright, we did all we could do.

The team we defeated finishes first,

We finish second, only one place worse,

The team that beat us, to third place tumbles,

That’s just the way that the cookie crumbles.
