Where I'm From

I am from a place where history repeats itself and things never change.

Where a black man is referred to as a black man and a white man is referred to as a man.

Where men and women work the same line but the pay never lines up.

Where a black woman’s “black is beautiful” and a white woman is beautiful.

I am from a place where innocent blood seeps through concrete way too often.

Where they say justice is blind but actually has 20/20 vision.

Where they say things like “Stop the violence” “Stop discrimination” “Skin color does not matter” knowing that the violence will never stop, neither will discrimination nor will skin color ever become irrelevant.

Where people will continue to be born with eyes and they will always be able to see the difference between black skin, white skin, and yellow skin.

Where it’s not possible to erase history which means people will always be

aware of the story behind black skin, white skin, and yellow skin.

I am from a place where history repeats itself and things never change.

Where before I go to the convenience store, or toys r us with my little sister, or I walk home with my hoodie up, I have to pray to God that I get home in one piece.

I am a negro from the “United” States of America.
