When People Die

I don’t know exactly what happens when people die

So forgive me if I try

And fail

To explain simply

But not everyone can be perfect all the time

And it’s hard to get it all into a small rhyme.

When people die

Maybe it’s slow

And they breathe softly

Quietly

At rest

Until somehow

The steady beat of life

Like a broken record

Fades.

Perhaps they keep their eyes open

And watch the light on the ceiling

Or the fan circling

Focused on everything

And nothing.

Maybe the eyes close.

Maybe there is nothing

Except a deep sleep.

But

Maybe death is very fast.

Maybe it’s a panic.

Maybe it’s unexpected.

When people die

Maybe it happens in an instant

And not in slow motion

Like in movies

And they fall down

In pain

Fear

Shock

Or sorrow

And look up to see

A blue sky

And soft clouds

And a light in the sky that simply

Fades.

For a moment they think

‘Everything will be alright.’

Then it all stops.

In a sense.

I guess they are right

In thinking that

It is all alright in the end

Or what this world calls

The end.

When people die

There must be someone waiting for them.

When people die

I think that while they are dying

They see someone they love very much

That they

Lost

So very long ago.

A face that smiles

And lifts their spirit

Into the light

So many see in the end

Of a fragile life.

But

After people die

I think

Their lives simply

Go on

And on

And on

Neverending

And never hurting

Waiting to be the spirit

To lift their

Son

Daughter

Spouse

Friend

Up to that bright

Heavenly home

That we are all living

And dying

To enter in

Once more.
