This is War

The smell of blood was heavy through the air,  Bodies litter the ground.  Next to me a soldier is muttering, praying to god.  Some are shaking,   Others are hoping for a safe return home.  My heart is pounding in my chest as I march with my fellow soldiers,  All of a sudden shots rang through out the air.  Soldiers next to me are dropping like flies,   Fumbling with my gun I fire blindly.  Then I feel it,   A bullet has pierced me.  The world seems to blur as I fall to the ground.  While trying to stand I feel a sharp pain in my chest,  Gasping for air I fall towards the earth,  My heart starts to race and I know the end is near.   Everything becomes silent as if nothing has happened.  I tilt my head towards the sky seeing the break of dawn,  Then as I watch the birds fly across the sky,  A small smile comes across my face,  And everything becomes still.
