A Villanelle of Fairies

The fairy folk use fairy doors
to keep their hidden world from us.
So few believe the ancient lore.

To sneak across our dusty floor
and steal some food without a fuss
the fairy folk use fairy doors.

It’s said they live on twilit moors
treasures forever free from dust;
but few believe the ancient lore.

They’ll taunt your kittens evermore;
flit out of reach, but only just
then run back to their fairy doors.

Most are content to be ignored:
when backs are turned they’ll steal a crust.
Still, few believe the ancient lore.

Oh, never open fairy doors,
they won’t return. So keep their trust.
For fairy folk use fairy doors,
do you believe the ancient lore?
