The Value of Moving Forward

I close my eyes to fall asleep and soon begin to dream.
And in this world, a carefree life is all it seems to be.
My friends are here talking about what they would like to eat.
They soon decide that they could really go for something sweet.
They see my face and ask me if I'd like to tag along.
I eat and eat and eat, because here, nothing can go wrong.
And after that we all decide to head down towards the beach.
With each and every step I become dizzy from the heat.
The sun is out, the sky is clear, my friends all gather round.
But in the night I hear a sudden interrupting sound.
I tell my friends goodbye as I am sad to leave this place.
I wake to feel the sweat that's dripping all over my face.
I reach over for my CGM, it warns me when I'm low.
The beeping sound alarms me because sometimes I don't know.
Without it, I would be in danger of staying asleep
while my blood sugar goes high or low, I'd say it's pretty neat.
Every few minutes it displays my numbers on a graph.
It also shows the trends so I can keep myself on track.
Because this device helps me to prevent the highs and lows,
I can maintain an active life.
I’m always on the go.
I quickly grab the sugar that I must always keep handy;
from juice boxes to sugar tabs, and small pieces of candy.
I put test strips in a glucometer when I’m unsure of my numbers.
A lancing device helps me to draw the blood from my fingers.
I enter what is says right into my CGM,
and off I go about my day as the graph continues again.

For anything I eat or drink, I have to count the carbs.
So eating out at restaurants can sure be a little hard.
The amount of carbs will tell me how much insulin I need,
which is why the foods with labels make things easier on me.
Though I can take injections, that is not the only path.
With insulin pumps one doesn’t even have to do the math.
There are many built in features to adjust to suit your needs.
It also aids for more control and close accuracy.
If one thinks they want to try a pump, there are all different kinds.
Thanks to the clip that’s on the back, it stays on at all times.
Although it stays hooked on, it surely doesn’t hold you down,
because you can disconnect it certain times you’re not around.
Having firm control over my blood sugar is key,
and these aids that guide me through each day help out tremendously.
I can’t forget to mention one very important test.
It shows how well I’m managing my glucose none the less.
This test is often called the Hemoglobin A1c.
To my advantage there are at-home tests available to me.
Thanks to all these devices that help keep me from feeling sick,
I can almost live with diabetes the same as someone who never did.
I love that I can see my readings even when I’m on the run.
They make life a whole lot easier for those who have Type 1.
It is the greatest feeling to keep going full of energy.
Without this help, without a doubt would soon go my vitality.
It’s comforting to have these things assisting in my life
because, with them, I have a better chance to get my levels right.
My life would be a whole lot different without these aids for sure,
and I’ll always be so grateful even when we find the cure.

Poetry is useful in many ways including but not limited to expressing emotions, telling stories, and educating the readers. I was diagnosed with. Type 1 diabetes at age 14 in June, 2010. Fortunately, there are some things out there that help guide me along in managing my glucose levels. Even when it feels impossible to get my blood sugar balanced, these aids do what they can do help keep me on track and keep me from losing hope. I want others that are out battling different diseases to keep hopeful and always do everything that they can to help them hold on tighter. Poetry is a style of writing that I feel can truly reach out to individuals and draw them in to keep reading until the end.
