Unmasked (Powder to You)
If I took off the make up that covers my face
I wonder what kind of assumptions I'd erase
If you could see me for what I really was
would you tremble, scream, or cry?
would you gawk, point, or laugh?
These words are marked deep
their inky patterns cover my face
hide who I am underneath
the lines that are drawn on me
the color that shrouds my face that others pick
the weight of the mask is heavier than what any shoulders can hold
I could scrub away and away until my own skin is raw
or...
I could start over and put a new blank layer on.
I will not let your marks hurt me.
No matter how mighty your pencil, pen, or brush may be.
