Unfocused
A drive down a highway can feel as if it lasts forever. The lights pass overhead, casting shadows across the road at an even tempo. The radio keeps in time to the beat of each passing line painted on the road. I can feel a cool breeze that makes the hairs on the back of my neck stick up. I stare out the windscreen, as if in a trance, unblinkning. Only one soul purpose; the road ahead. I snap back into reality. I missed my turn. I can't go back until I reach the next town. It's a fair distance away. I glance at the dashboard. The fuel gauge reads empty. My car starts to slow. I pull over, not another soulwithin sight. I missed my opportunity. If only I had payed attention, maybe I would have lived to tell the tale.
