Like a Two Year Old

Being a teenager is like being a two year old again.

Everything is new. There are so many possibilities.

Every day has new discoveries that ignite more questions.

Sometimes, like a two year old, teenagers eagerly reach out to try.

Sometimes, like a two year old, teenagers recoil back in anger or fear.

Being a teenager means that life is exciting.

Like two year olds finger bright beads and grass blades,

Teenagers finger college seats and steering wheels.

Like  two year olds run from shower water or from school,

Teenagers want to retreat from bank accounts and legal papers.

But we both have to face our showers and taxes one day.

As a two year old differentiates from small and big, round and square, full and empty,

Teenagers learn that between black and white are gradients of grey.

As concepts as mother, father, sister, house make themselves home in a two year old's heart,

Questions such as war, destiny, future, and injustice confront teenagers, along with the eternal how comes and what ifs.

We both have to learn to keep our feet on the ground and find truth.

Being a teenager is like being a two year old again.
