Sweet Nothings

Location

As I whispered sweet nothings

into your ear

and held you closely

as you cried,

I fell unbearably slowly

into a deep love with you

from which I knew

I would not return.

And as I looked into the ocean

that is the blue of your eyes,

I knew that no matter

how much I loved you

and no matter

how much of my heart

I gave to you,

it would never be enough.

No matter what I did for you,

I was never enough

for even your weakest needs.

My love for you

could fill the hearts of millions,

but your love for me

was as nonexistent

as the cure

for the common cold.
