Sweet and Sour

You were my flavor of candy;

At first so sweet,

Then sharp and deep.

The addicting kind of savory,

The one that left me weak.

I tried to be good enough to keep you;

I needed you, you see.

Until I learned you’re not my taste of candy,

And I let myself be free.

My mother still reminds me,

How I deserve to love myself,

That’s when the definition of love,

Shifted from the sweet before the sour.

When love was defined by moments apart from lust,

It is seen in the offered therapy for recovery,

The long hug from your dad,

A concerned look when being listened to,

And all because they really love you.
