Speechless

Words unknown, tangled in throats

And a constant hum in her ears

The world is her oyster and she is the sea

Trapped in a melody only she can hear

Toes curl over the edge

Take a deep breath

Plunge into the water below

If only he could see that they are meant to be

The fish out of water steals the show

In her dreams, she sings to him

In her days, she signs

A simple wave, a silent hello

But what she would give

To stand on that stage

And for once, have a voice to bellow

They call her a mermaid, born of the sea

The fastest swimmer in school

But he is a pirate, rugged and fierce

Blind to the love she cannot profess

Except maybe someday she’ll capture his heart

A fishing net tangled in his ribs

She’ll reel him in like a little fish

Pucker her lips for true love’s kiss

And then he will know of his mermaid fair

The gangly deaf girl in class

And she’ll be his princess

And he, her prince

And once upon a time

Turns to happily ever after
