When we're 5 we say the darnest things,

And think we will grow up to have wings. 

A year goes by and we start school, 

We see learning letters is really cool. 

Next fall it gets a little harder, 

But gosh, don't you feel smarter. 

Before you know it, you can divide! 

Those numbers on paper have nowhere to hide. 

Without realizing, we use big words,

More impressive things, like adjectives and verbs. 

The world comes into sharper focus, 

We understand life, from a bee to a locust. 

It started out with shapes and letters, 

And now you know something even better. 

You know the secrets of the earth,

Things you didn't know at birth. 

Thank you school for teaching me what I didn't know, 

All of that knowledge helped me grow.
