Sink

Through tired eyes I watch the sky go dark
There’s no moon out and the stars give little light
The ocean waves are nearing closer
The crashing of waves growing louder
And I hope that I just might…

I feel the water begin to brush against my feet
The bubbles carried by the rising tide
Stay there, popping one by one around my heels
Then disappearing back into the sea with the next wave
And I hope that I just might…

Soon the shoreline is past my head
I’m forced to lift my chin so I can breathe right
As each new wave is dragged back into the ocean
So too, is my body pulled out toward the sea
And I hope that I just might…

Then, I’m floating in the vast body of water
Land is no longer visible so I close my eyes, but cannot think
I feel fear, but picture dissolution
I release the breath I was holding in my lungs
And I hope I just might sink.
