Scenic Drive
The eyes of the cat move back and forth with pendulums swings. It's smile was always disconcerting, always luring him to the window.8 stories of regret waited for him, each heavier than the last. His fingers continued to type out the last will and testament for his client. A young man who was in no danger of dying had brought in his sweet old ma. She was terminal. It was inoperable. She was happy. He was inconsolable. It was a rather gray day outside, the sky had not yet decided to make work ironically cheerful or a tumor that is celebrated. it was quiet, no one but him in today, the cat was his company, his only friend. It watched him and smiled, its eyes moving with pendulum swings. They walked in, the young man supporting his wisdom. The seats were taken, tissues were provided, the old ma stuck her's in her sleeve, he threw his away, men don't cry, they plead. We nodded and gave each other warm welcomes, smiles were free, her son was cold, deader than the box that she would occupy. She had not yet said her burial wishes only that we consider the children. We nodded and gave each other warm welcomes, smiles were free, her son was cold, deader than the box that she would occupy. She had not yet said her burial wishes only that we consider the children. The money must go the youngest, the oldest will fend for themselves. The jewlery must be sold off and the house must be auctioned. The young man held back sniffles. He held...he held...he held...yet one fell. My heart was slowly losing hope. His had sold it off to pay for the box. My only friend now watched us all, it's eyes moving with pendulum swings. His fingers grabbed a roll of tape and delicaletly pulled out a strip. The document was torn, it would hold for now, but later he must replace it. The young man held back his sniffles, he held onto his mothers arm, pulling her back from the light she was to go beyond. The young man saw the cat and asked, "Where did you get that?" I looked at him, paused..."You wouldn't believe me no matter how little I've lied in my life." The young man smiled...a challenge..."Try me." I looked at the mother and she sat there, staring at the cat, not thinking of us. I began my story..."I was in New York, browsing the covers of the various rags, listening to someone play Bohemian Rhapsodey on a Piano on the streets. I walked over, there was the piano and it's pet. The man was dancing and belting his throat till it bleed dry his air supply. He was in love with the noise his owner was making. The keys were singing along with him, till he noticed me. Or it was lady to the side. His tune become slow, a shift away from high tempo, it was an old bluesy one. The lyrics I'll never remmeber but the feel was surreal, dreamlike. He finished playing the song and I clapped. I was the only clapping though. Everyone else stared at him. They were no better than zombies. I panicked and looked for help. He smiled and told me to take a seat. He looked me right in the eye. He put his hand on my arm. He pulled my mind with his teeth. He asked me, "What's troubling you today?" I had no reply, no troubles of mine were worth mentioning to a boogeyman. So he smiled, he looked me in the eye and out of his pocket he pulled a kitten. "When you feel your end is near, pull it's tail, I'll hear, and I'll play you out in style." The boogeyman man dissaperead. Nobody was clapping or standing there anymore. Nobody was with me, I stood in my home, with a kitten in my hand." The young man smiled at the old spinner. He liked his imagination. His ma still stared at the cat, eyes moving with pendulum swings. The cat meowed, it was noon and the will was not done. The tape stuck and another scratch appeared. He pulled out another strip of tape and felt his head grow light. The cat meowed and it was 1 o'clock. The man fell towards the window, the widow and her son were gone. The tape fell out of his hands...no...It was stuck to his thumb as the mass fell towards the ground. He felt the tape grow heavier and heavier. The roll get thinner and thinner. The boogeyman wanted to play. He could hear Bohemian Rhapsody.
