Saved

A single breath, the last one before the big plunge

She looks out over the bay, gray eyes searching, searching

The mast of a single ship is on the horizon

They wouldn’t reach her in time to save her

She glances behind her, knowing she would never survive this

Wanting for someone to reach out and stop her

No one is there

Resigned, she glances at the cold water fifty feet below

Waves crashing against the rocks, razor sharp teeth piercing

She looks up toward Heaven, waiting for some sign that someone is there

Nothing

She glances back down, takes a breath, and dives

Body pulled by gravity to the depths of the ocean

Toward the rocks

Her eyes closed, she cannot see the invisible force

The one that pulls her away from the rocks and back up to the cliff

She opens her eyes and finds herself on solid ground

Not a scratch to indicate that she’d leapt at all

Tears stream down her face

She’s safe
