Ribbons and Bows

My hands reaching out towards the shadows of my past

Searching for the frame of the memories that didn’t last

Smiling faces of a family of six

A family of six that no longer exists

Do you remember the fights and the things that were said

when you didn’t get along and there was more than one bed?

Do you remember how many boxes it took to pack the house

when one of you decided you didn’t want to be a spouse?

An emotional rollercoaster of high’s and low’s

A childhood filled with more than ribbons and bows

Sitting on the stairs, we would listen to the fights

Wondering when it would end and who was right.

Struggles are what happens when things don’t go our way

When we think we hit rock bottom and people start to stray

Families tear apart and promises begin to break

trust isn’t there and give turns to take

Do you remember the times filled with love and laughter

when there was no misery and the pain came after?

Do you remember when you left and just kept walking

when you didn’t come back until we were done talking?

An emotional rollercoaster of high’s and low’s

A childhood filled with more than ribbons and bows

And as I grow up, I learn to cautious

in a world full of pain and words that are thoughtless.
