Redneck Adventures

Sara’s Tale: Redneck Adventures

  1. Packing up the bed,

We’ve got somewhere to head.

Adding things just in case,

Takes up all of the extra space.

  1. All our swimsuits are under our clothes.

As we’re going to the lake that everybody knows.

The truck ride there

Is full of windblown hair.

Changing the dial on the radio

10     Blasting every song on the stereo.

          Cruising through the hills,

Passing each of the road kills.

The sweet aroma of skunk and possum

Is nothing compared to a flower in blossom.

15     Looking out the window as cars pass,

I start to see the end of the grass.

          Slowly coming to a stop,

          All the electronics drop.

          We run through the sand

20     With a towel in each hand.

          Rushing into the refreshing water,

The day goes on getting hotter and hotter.

          We take a break

And head off of the lake.

25     Going twenty five

People don’t know how to drive.

Sitting in the heat of the sun

A detour opens and the traffic is done.

          We take a gravel road,

30     Behind a tractor we get slowed.

          Trying to pass

          We hit on the gas.

          I lose control

And the wheels hit a pot hole.

35     Getting out seeing what there is to look at

Sighs of disappointment, we see the flat.

The mechanic arrives and gives us the bill

He’s helpful to us like Dr. Phil. (Allusion)

We begin to relax and settle down

40     As the radio sings many sounds.

                   Finally reaching the farm,

We all get out and hold arms.

                   Saying a prayer to begin,

Everyone grabs a plate and digs in.

45     With our full bellies, we find room for dessert

Secretly thinking that seconds never hurt.

The wild kids play a few games

While the chatty Cathy’s have much to explain.

The day ends as the sun begins to set,

50     Flying by like a passing corvette.

Darker and dark as the night rolls in,

All the cousins share a grin.

Sneaking away to the barn out back,

We rush on out to the dirt road tracks.

55     Riding with a pole and a net,

Talking about what the group will get.

Fishing and listening for the croaks to come out,

We start to gig for the frogs all about.

Catching a few here and there,

60     Giving up when we see fog in the air.

Then we begin to mess around,

Wrestling each other to the ground.

                    Covered in mud and dirt,

I wash it of my pants and shirt.

65     We pack our stuff so everything is stuck,

And head back to the truck.

Making all of the memories that we can,

We keep in touch for further plans.

Never knowing when it might be too late,

70     Take moments for granted and never wait.
