A Realization of Firsts

We all have only one life to live,

And whether we like it or not - that life is what we have to give.

But throughout that life i believe many forget to notice,

The things both little and big that happen to us.

Though perhaps I am wrong and poorly mistaken,

And we do notice the things but they are simply soon forgotten.

But this I refuse to accept as truth,

Because the way the average go through life is so uncouth.

Bumping blindly along during their day,

Ignorant of every experience they pass on the way.

People like this I pity them much,

For not sucking the marrow out of life and such.

However the truth I accept as a rock solid law,

Is that life is full of firsts and each one deserves awe.

Just think of all the things that have happened to you,

And all the experiences that you've been through.

Even the smallest happening occurs a first time,

And the sad thing is that we often don't see it and thats a crime.

Like stepping on a sidewalk crack,

Seemingly insignificant and speciality to you it might lack.

Or bumping your toe on a furniture end,

Which endless cursing it seemed to recommend.

Also lighting a match on a camping trip,

And how the dancing flames seemed to lap and flip.

All of those things seem small and meaningless,

Holding no more water than a bucket thats bottomless.

But they all share a common trait and please get this through your brain,

Since they are similar in that you will never experience them for a first time again.

Yes you may do them a second time and this is likely the case,

But you will never experience it the way you did in that first place.

Forever forgetting the way you felt when it happened first,

However hard for that experience you might thirst.

Because the evil simple truth is this,

Nothing happens for the first time twice though you may reminisce.

Just think of all firsts you’ve done,

Your first hug first kiss first dream first run,

First party first injury first sketch first class,

First plane ride first car drive first time smelling grass.

All taking place in an individual moment or more,

Never to occur again quite the same way as before.

But I suppose some firsts you don't want to have at all,

Like first tear first scream first failure first fall.

And that is perhaps what can balance the scale,

Because why would you want to relive your first fail.

And this is where it comes down to the mind,

Since what is important to one may to another be blind.

So perhaps you could say some firsts don't matter,

But I will never agree with that instead look at the latter.

That every first matters no matter how brief a time it took,

Because it happened it did and you can never relive it for a second look.

Due to the very nature of its name,

It can never happen again and through thus earns it’s fame.
